This past weekend I participated in the artist event Steel Rail Sessions 2014 in Waterloo Ontario.
Steel Rail Sessions brings together artists from different mediums and lets them run wild with various themes on a moving train. Each rail car has a different theme and artists enact their interpretation of that theme in whichever way they see fit. I was asked to take a room in the car themed, "If the internet was the real world." It was immediately apparent to me that cats needed to be the focus of my room (I like cats). After some brainstorming, a vision for the crazy cat room came together. On the day, I tinfoiled the walls and celling to make the room feel more internetie, and strung up multicoloured yarn and streamers to signify interconnectivity. I coated the room in as many cat photos as I could (around 180) and in a corner set up my 5d with a wide angle lens and tethered it to my laptop. Blasting electronic music brought it all together making the room into a giant weird cat photo booth experience!
The crazy cat room was a huge hit, once things got going there was always someone new visiting me! People kept showing up having heard about the room in other part of the train and most visitors came back for a second or third round of photos after a few drinks.
Below is a selection of some of my personal favourite photos. To view all 150 of the crazy cat room images head on over to facebook and visit The Cord Community Edition's page.
